DofE Enrolment

We introduced the Bronze DofE award to the Scout Group (DUDES and older Scouts) at the end of 2023 and intend to run Bronze and Silver from November 2024.

Current fee per participant (via Scouts Scotland) is £30 for Bronze and Silver level; £36 for Gold. The DofE structure mirrors a lot of our Scouting programme, so the Group is able to subsidise this fee from your existing subscription. However, the Group's costs are steadily rising, so we'd appreciate each participant donating towards enrolment - up to you how much (we asked for £10 in 2023). We have plenty of exped kit that can be borrowed too: please don't see finances as a barrier. As with all things Scouting, it's run by volunteers, and we may also need your support to run aspects of the programme.

Next Steps

Participants should check in with the DofE Leader (currently Rob, but hopefully the ESLs will take over in 2025) before starting any activities in Physical, Skills or Volunteering. Expedition will require training and planning over the winter months.

  1. Once we have a batch of interested Scouts/Explorers, we will purchase places from Scouts Scotland, then allocate each place to the participant. Will take a few weeks to sort out
  2. Once your details have been added to the DofE system (from the data in this form), the participant will receive details of logging in and how to install the app. This probably won't be immediate so just hold on! Once the participant has installed the app, they can add more details, such as home address, so that you can receive your starter pack and assessor sheets. The starter pack can take up to 5 weeks, but you can start logging activity online straight away.
  3. Basic info on using eDofE is at help.edofe.org/hc/en-gb/articles/360015548137-Basic-info-eDofE
  4. Donate at gtap.uk/63/dofe-dunning

How can parents help

  1. Help ensure that the activity choices they find are exciting, but realistic for your budget, transport and local facilities.
  2. Help find an Assessor.  Every young person needs to find an Assessor to sign off each DofE section. The Assessor can be anyone who knows about or organises the activity. It might be the gym or sports instructor, art teacher, club or volunteering event organiser and so on. It cannot be a family member.
  3. Financial & logistics support. Your child will receive a personalised DofE Card when they start their Award. This gives at least 10% off at our recommended retailers, helping you save on expedition kit and other items needed for their DofE. Be prepared to offer transport and ride share when possible.
  4. Get the evidence. Remind them to keep gathering their evidence, e.g. photographs/certificates, and uploading it to eDofE.
  5. Prove it. As their programme comes to an end you can remind them to make sure their Assessors write their reports so that they can complete the section.
  6. Use it. Ensure they include their DofE involvement and achievements in their CV or personal statement. More importantly help them understand what they gained and how to apply it on the pathway to adulthood.

DofE Expression of Interest Form

This form is only for existing members of (and those Scouts about to join) Dunning's Explorer Scout Unit: the DUDES. It's just basic data which is subsequently entered into the Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) system. Once registered, the participant will receive more information directly from DofE.

All communication about DofE will go to this address. It's preferred to have the participant's email address rather than the parent's.
Note that the earliest a participant can start is based on their school year, so the starting age can be up to 6 months younger than stated: Bronze can start at S3; Silver at S4; Gold at S5. All awards have to be completed by the participant's 25th birthday. Participants can register for the next level if they have completed at least one section of the previous award.
